Hong Kong prices record HKD 20 billion digital green bond

The Hong Kong government has priced approximately HKD 20 billion worth of digital green bonds under its Sustainable Bond Programme. This issuance marks the world’s largest digital bond and represents the government’s fourth digital green bond offering.

The multi-currency issuance includes tranches in Hong Kong dollars, Renminbi, US dollars, and euros. Notably, the HKD tranche utilized tokenized deposits powered by EnsembleTX, making it the first digital bond globally to integrate such technology. This integration aims to support a digital ecosystem and explore the programmable features of digital money.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan noted that the issuance was oversubscribed, indicating strong market demand for tokenized products. The offering also adopted the International Capital Market Association’s Bond Data Taxonomy Version 2.0 to enhance data consistency and automation throughout the bond lifecycle. Officials stated that the government intends to continue issuing tokenized bonds regularly to advance fintech innovation and strengthen Hong Kong’s position in green finance.
