Hong Kong raises minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers
The Hong Kong government has announced a 2.35% increase in the prescribed minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers. The monthly rate will rise from HK$5,100 to HK$5,220, effective for all new contracts signed on or after October 3, 2026.
Under standard employment contracts, employers must provide free meals or a food allowance of no less than HK$1,236 per month. The government stated that the wage review considers various socio-economic factors, including the overall economic performance of Hong Kong, labor market conditions, and the basic living needs of domestic helpers.
Legal guidelines also emphasize that employers must provide at least one rest day every seven days and cannot substitute statutory holidays with monetary payments. Violations regarding wage payments can result in significant fines and imprisonment.
