Hong Kong resident rejects new Tung Chung housing for older estate

A Hong Kong resident who waited eight years for public housing has sparked online debate after twice rejecting new housing units in Tung Chung to accept a unit in the 47-year-old Tai Wo Hau Estate.

The applicant, a member of an expanded urban three-person family, previously declined offers at Yung Tung Estate (completed in 2018) and Chun Tung Estate. She ultimately chose the Tai Wo Hau Estate unit, which was built in 1979, citing the need to maintain her children's current school placements and the convenience of existing transportation networks.

While some netizens expressed confusion over rejecting newer buildings with sea views, others defended the decision. Supporters highlighted the practical advantages of the older estate, including its central location within the Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, and Kwai Chung areas, proximity to affordable markets like Yeung Uk Road Market, and better access to diverse bus routes. The resident also noted that the assigned unit required less renovation because the previous occupant had already replaced the windows.
