Hong Kong residents travel to mainland China for food purchases

A growing trend of Hong Kong residents traveling to mainland China for consumption has extended to daily food items, specifically roasted meats. Social media discussions have highlighted a phenomenon where elderly residents frequently purchase cooked poultry in mainland China to bring back to Hong Kong.

While some netizens defend this behavior by citing the advantages of mainland food being both high quality and low cost, others have raised concerns regarding food safety. Specifically, there are worries that transporting cooked meat over long distances, particularly during hot summer weather, increases the risk of spoilage and hygiene issues.

Debates have also emerged regarding the origin of local products, with some users noting that certain Hong Kong roast meat shops actually process their food in Shenzhen factories before transporting it to local outlets. Conversely, proponents of local consumption argue that Hong Kong's fresh poultry is more reliable and safer to consume.
