Hong Kong securities employee arrested after misusing HK$50 million and triggering HK$150 million loss
Hong Kong police detained a 26‑year‑old trader from a securities firm after a director reported unauthorised use of the company’s account. The employee diverted HK$50 million of firm funds as margin and bought a double‑leverage ETF that tracks SK Hynix shares. When the semiconductor sector fell, the ETF plunged more than 72%, expanding the loss to roughly HK$150 million.
The trader has been charged with theft and remains in custody. Authorities note that the leveraged position has not yet been closed, so the final loss could change with further market moves.
