Hong Kong study finds 28% of students interested in sports industry

A study by the Solidarity Hong Kong Foundation reveals that nearly 30% of secondary school students in Hong Kong intend to pursue careers in the sports industry. However, the report highlights significant barriers, including a lack of information regarding diverse career paths and insufficient internship opportunities. Approximately 56% of surveyed students were unaware of roles beyond athletes and coaches.

The foundation has proposed several policy recommendations to the government and Education Bureau. These include optimizing career planning websites, establishing dedicated teams to coordinate vocational experiences with businesses, and creating broader dual-track development guidelines to support non-elite student athletes. The report also suggests reviewing the Student and Athlete Learning Support and Admissions (SALSA) scheme to provide more permanent support and dedicated university admission quotas.

To address administrative hurdles, the study recommends simplifying the application process for Leisure and Cultural Services Department facilities, particularly for emerging sports. Additionally, the foundation noted that salary levels remain a major deterrent for youth entering the sector. A follow-up report scheduled for next year will focus on higher education, career transitions for retired athletes, and industry compensation levels.
