Hong Kong to support Chinese green-tech expansion via sustainable finance

Hong Kong is positioned to serve as a critical financial bridge for Chinese green-technology companies expanding into emerging markets, particularly in the Global South. During a forum organized by the Hong Kong Green Finance Association and the Greater Bay Area Green Finance Alliance, banking executives from institutions including HSBC, DBS, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China (Hong Kong) highlighted the city's role in financing the global energy transition.

Paul Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, announced that Hong Kong will launch the second phase of the ‘Hong Kong Sustainable Finance Taxonomy’ prototype to cover more economic activities. He also noted plans to collaborate with international teams to provide transition bonds and loans to support the shift toward a low-carbon economy.

To address the financing gap in emerging markets—where only about 10% of green projects currently reach financial closing—the ‘Green Accelerator’ was launched. This initiative aims to scale mature green technologies in sectors such as energy transition, sustainable food systems, circular economy, and climate resilience to meet international investment standards.
