Hong Kong Triathlon Drowning Claims 59-Year-Old Participant
During the 2026 Hong Kong Summer Triathlon Challenge at Tai Mei Tuk in Tai Po, a 59‑year‑old male competitor (surname Ma) fell into the water while swimming the challenge division. He was reported missing at about 07:00 a.m. amid heavy rain. The Hong Kong Triathlon Association immediately activated its emergency response, alerting the police, fire services and rescue teams. Divers, a fire‑service frogman team and police drones searched the water and surrounding area for several hours.
The participant was found unconscious around 15:00 p.m., rescued by fire‑service divers and taken to North District Hospital, but he later died despite medical efforts. The association confirmed it had notified the athlete’s family, provided support, and pledged full cooperation with rescue authorities while continuing to monitor the incident.
