Hong Kong upgrades elite sports training for 2026 Asian Games

Hong Kong is enhancing its elite sports training system in preparation for the 2026 Asian Games. Through the Elite Athlete Development Fund and a joint sports research initiative with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the government is investing heavily in professionalizing the local sports sector.

Key developments include the opening of a new Hong Kong Sports Institute building in late 2024, which features expanded facilities such as a 1,400-square-meter table tennis hall and a doubled fencing hall. Government funding for the Institute is projected to reach nearly HK$1 billion for the 2026-27 fiscal year, a 30% increase compared to five years ago. The Institute is also restructuring to establish an independent sports medicine department covering medical, nutritional, and psychological services, while utilizing AI for rapid motion analysis.

To support athlete longevity, the government is promoting a dual-track development model that allows athletes to balance training with academic pursuits. Additionally, increased financial subsidies for international competitions and the recruitment of world-class coaches aim to transform elite sports into a viable professional career path.
