Hong Leong Bank enables QR payments in China via UnionPay partnership
Hong Leong Bank (HLB) has launched a cross-border payment feature allowing customers to make direct QR payments at over 120 million merchants in China. Through a strategic partnership with UnionPay International (UPI), users can scan Weixin Pay, UnionPay, and Cloud QuickPass QR codes directly via the HLB Connect mobile banking app.
The service supports both merchant-presented and consumer-presented QR modes. To facilitate easier travel, the bank’s Multi-Currency Feature allows customers to convert Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) into Offshore Chinese Yuan (CNH) in advance to lock in favorable exchange rates. Payments are deducted directly from the CNH balance without transaction fees or service charges.
For transfers to individual Weixin QR codes, limits are set at 500 CNY per transaction or 2,000 CNY daily. For merchant-based Weixin or UnionPay QR codes, the daily limit is 10,000 CNY. Users must activate the UnionPay function within the HLB Connect app settings to utilize the service.
