Hong Sang-soo film explores grief and social judgment

The film ‘On The Beach At Night Alone’ (2017), written and directed by Hong Sang-soo, explores the non-linear and complex nature of grief and healing. Competing for the Golden Bear at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, the narrative centers on Young-hee, a former famous actress.

Following a forbidden affair with a married director, Young-hee faces social judgment and attempts to escape her circumstances by moving from Seoul to Germany. The story examines her struggle to navigate societal perceptions and her internal emotional turmoil, portraying her experience not just as a personal loss, but as a confrontation with how society judges and penalizes individuals.
