Hoàng Thùy Linh's 'Bánh Trôi Nước' integrates folk culture into Vpop

The song "Bánh Trôi Nước" (Woman), released by singer Hoàng Thùy Linh in June 2016, is recognized as a turning point for Vpop by blending Vietnamese folk culture with modern pop music. Based on the famous poetry of Hồ Xuân Hương, the song uses the imagery of floating rice cakes to discuss the historical status of women.

Produced by Long Halo and composed by Hồ Hoài Anh, the track features electronic melodies infused with folk colors. The music video utilizes stylized East Asian aesthetics, employing symbolic imagery and contemporary visual language to honor the image of Vietnamese women. Following its release, the music video reached over 15 million views within four months and received numerous accolades at major music awards in 2016.
