Hongqi debuts EHS7 with perovskite solar cell sunroof

Hongqi, a brand under the FAW Group, has introduced the Hongqi EHS7 (known as the Tiangong 08 in some markets), which features the world’s first prototype sunroof utilizing perovskite photovoltaic cells. Unlike traditional rigid and heavy silicon-based solar panels, perovskite is a thinner, more flexible, and lightweight material capable of higher sunlight conversion efficiency.

While the manufacturer suggests this technology could eventually provide up to 80 kilometers of free range, current technical assessments note limitations. Under optimal sunlight, the cells are estimated to produce approximately 300 W of power, yielding roughly 1.1 kWh per day. Given the vehicle's energy consumption, this translates to approximately 5.5 kilometers of additional daily range. There are also technical questions regarding whether this power output is sufficient to run the vehicle's thermal management systems and electronics required for the charging process.
