Honister Slate Mine zip line opens in England's Lake District

A 1,200‑metre zip line, capable of speeds up to 65 mph, opened to the public at Honister Slate Mine in Cumbria's Lake District on the weekend of 8 August 2026. The attraction, billed as England's longest zip wire, follows 15 years of planning and construction that began with applications in 2011 and received final approval in 2018.

The Weir family, now run by brothers Prentice and Piers Wilkinson Weir, said the launch marks a new chapter for the historic mine, which also offers climbing, an infinity bridge and via ferrata routes. Tickets start at £109‑£110 for a 60‑second flight, with limited slots available in the first year. The project is promoted as a boost to the local economy and a way to preserve the site for future generations.
