Honolulu Police Department targets female representation and staffing shortages
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is launching initiatives to address staffing shortages and improve workforce diversity. As part of the national 30x30 initiative, HPD has pledged to increase the representation of women in its ranks from 14% to 30% by 2030. Deputy Chief Parker Bode stated the goal is to improve recruitment and career advancement for women rather than simply meeting a quota.
Simultaneously, Police Chief David Lazar is focusing on closing a significant staffing gap. While the department has faced hundreds of vacancies, recent academy classes have seen record numbers of recruits. Lazar aims to boost officer pay, expand the use of technology, and prioritize officer wellness to improve retention and community service. The department is currently working to reduce its vacancy count, which stands at approximately 275 to 474 positions depending on the inclusion of trainees.
