Honor Colorado faces internal political friction in Paraguay

The dominant Honor Colorado movement within Paraguay’s Colorado Party is experiencing internal political friction as different factions vie for influence and future presidential leadership. Senator Ignacio Iramain has characterized the tension as a struggle for hegemony, suggesting that the sector supporting President Santiago Peña has gained enough economic and political weight to challenge the traditional leadership associated with Horacio Cartes.

Iramain argued that the party is driven by business interests rather than ideology, warning that these disputes could undermine technical institutions, specifically citing concerns regarding the credibility of the Central Bank of Paraguay.

Simultaneously, internal disagreements have become more public, involving governors, deputies, and senators. While no formal split has occurred, leaders such as Gustavo Leite and Nicanor Duarte Frutos have expressed criticisms regarding government management and budgetary priorities. Pedro Alliana has also signaled a refusal to accept impositions, highlighting a shift from the centralized, disciplined structure that previously defined the movement.
