Honor launches Robot Phone with integrated three-axis gimbal

Honor has released the Robot Phone in China, a device that distinguishes itself by integrating a motorized three-axis physical gimbal into its hardware. Unlike standard smartphones that rely on Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) to digitally crop and adjust frames, the Robot Phone uses a mechanical system to move the camera module itself. This approach aims to provide native 4K video with full dynamic range and higher sharpness by avoiding the pixel interpolation and field-of-view reduction common in software-based stabilization.

The device features a 200 MP main camera mounted on a titanium arm with four degrees of freedom that rises from the camera plateau when the gimbal mode is activated. While the mechanical stabilization performs effectively, early hands-on testing suggests a trade-off in resolution, as the specific camera mode utilizing the gimbal may result in lower resolution compared to standard modes. The phone is currently priced at approximately 9,999 yuan (roughly $1,480) and is primarily available in the Chinese market.
