Honor launches Robot Phone with integrated mechanical gimbal

Honor has officially launched the Honor Robot Phone, a new category of smartphone that integrates a motorized three-axis mechanical gimbal directly into the device. Developed in collaboration with the professional cinematography firm ARRI, the phone aims to bridge the gap between mobile devices and professional film production tools.

The hardware features a titanium-alloy 4-degree-of-freedom (4-DoF) gimbal system capable of rotating up to 360 degrees per second. This system supports AI-driven subject tracking, allowing the camera to automatically follow moving targets for vlogging and cinematic shots. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and includes a 200 MP main sensor, a 200 MP periscope telephoto lens with 2.7x optical zoom, and a 50 MP ultra-wide camera.

Technical specifications include a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display with a peak brightness of 6,800 nits and a 7,060 mAh silicon-carbon battery. The phone supports professional workflows, such as 10-bit ARRI LogC3 recording and direct integration with software like DaVinci Resolve. While the device introduces significant mechanical innovation, some discussions have emerged regarding privacy concerns due to the automated camera movement and the device's physical thickness of approximately 9.6 mm.
