Honorio Delgado Espinoza Hospital fire leads to suspect arrest

A fire affecting approximately 300 square meters broke out at the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital in Arequipa. The blaze originated in a rear area containing accumulated debris, scrap metal, wood, and unused medical equipment, which facilitated rapid spread and heavy smoke.

Due to the proximity of the fire to the psychiatry ward, hospital staff evacuated patients as a precautionary measure. More than 30 firefighters, along with police and municipal risk management personnel, responded to the scene. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Authorities have identified a suspect, Juan Javier Gutiérrez Zavala, believed to be an inmate in the psychiatry ward under judicial custody. He is currently detained at the Palacio Viejo police station as investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances of the fire. The incident has raised questions regarding security protocols and the custody of inmates within the hospital facility. The remaining six inmates from the psychiatry ward were transferred to other locations for their safety.
