Hoogeveen cancels hydrogen pilot project for residential heating

Partners including Essent, Gasunie, Remeha, RENDO, and the municipality of Hoogeveen have decided to terminate the hydrogen pilot project intended to replace natural gas for home heating. The decision affects the planned Nijstad-Oost housing development and nine existing homes in the Erflanden district.

The cancellation stems from the inability to establish a safe and reliable hydrogen delivery system in a timely manner. Specifically, the odorization system, which adds a scent to the odorless hydrogen to ensure leaks can be detected, has not functioned sufficiently, and no immediate solution is available.

To prevent delays in housing construction, the Nijstad-Oost development will proceed using alternative heating solutions, likely heat pumps. Project partners stated that their priority is to address the practical and financial consequences for builders and residents who had expected hydrogen connections.
