Hoogeveen center chairman calls for prevention after youth unrest
Erwin Slomp, chairman of Binnenstad Hoogeveen, is calling for a structural approach to address ongoing unrest caused by youths in the center of Hoogeveen. Recent incidents have included the harassment of local business owners, making visitors feel unsafe, and the intimidating use of heavy fireworks in public spaces.
While Slomp expressed satisfaction with the recent interventions by the police, municipal enforcement, and the local government, he argues that enforcement alone will not solve the problem. He advocates for increased investment in prevention and personal connection, suggesting that youth workers, youth police officers, and specialized enforcement officers should work to build relationships with local youths to reduce anonymity.
Slomp also highlighted the responsibility of parents, questioning their awareness of their children's activities during the evening hours.
