Hoogeveen swimming pool project faces power grid constraints

The construction of a new swimming pool in Hoogeveen is facing challenges due to limited electricity grid capacity. The regional power network is nearly at full utilization, creating a bottleneck for the project, which is slated for completion in 2029.

Grid operator Rendo has stated that there is currently no transport capacity available at the intended location. Under existing regulations, contracted transport capacity is tied to specific existing connections and locations, meaning power from the current facility cannot be easily transferred to the new site.

To address these issues, Rendo is working on expanding and optimizing the grid, including reinforcing the network throughout Hoogeveen and adding a new substation at the Riegmeer business park. Additionally, authorities are investigating whether the pool's social function could allow it to receive priority for power capacity.

Despite these technical hurdles, the project is progressing. The municipal council is expected to decide on the design in December 2026. Recent public presentations have showcased plans for the facility, which will include a family slide, wellness amenities, and an eight-lane competition pool.
