Hoover Institution acquires rare Russo-Dutch Red Cross photo album

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives has acquired a rare photo album documenting the Russo-Dutch Red Cross field hospital during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905).

The album contains 167 gelatin silver print photographs mounted on heavy cardstock. The images depict various locations, including Manchuria, Chita, and the Dubovskoe District in Primorskii Krai. Captured scenes include soldiers in trenches, sentries, interactions with locals, and a Red Cross hospital tent housing injured patients.

Created in Saint Petersburg by master bookbinder A. A. Schnell, the album is noted for its artistic value as well as its historical documentation. The leather-bound volume features the Red Cross emblem alongside the Russian and Dutch flags.
