Hope Fire Department responds to three separate fires in one morning

The Hope Fire Department responded to three separate incidents on the morning of September 24, including two fires at homeless encampments.

At 6:15 a.m., crews extinguished a fire in the root ball of a downed tree at the mouth of the Coquihalla River. At 7:15 a.m., firefighters arrived at an encampment on Water Avenue along Highway 1, located between the highway and the Fraser River. Six firefighters used four apparatus to extinguish flames involving tents, tarps, refuse, and trees. No injuries were reported at this location.

At 10:00 a.m., a third fire occurred near Exit 173 on Highway 3. Ten firefighters responded to a fully involved temporary structure and a 10x20 metre area of burning garbage within an encampment. During this incident, two individuals were treated for smoke inhalation and one person sustained burn injuries. The RCMP and BCEHS were present at the scene. The causes of all three fires are currently under investigation.
