Hope Mission approved for new 120-bed shelter in southeast Edmonton

Edmonton City Council has approved a rezoning application for a new 120-bed homeless shelter to be operated by the Hope Mission in the southeast part of the city. The facility is planned for a site near Argyll Road and 75 Street, specifically within the organization’s existing warehouse on Girard Road.

The Hope Mission intends to open the permanent, 24/7 shelter in time for the winter season to address the growing need for more shelter spaces. The move is viewed as a step toward decentralizing social services away from the city’s inner core.

During the public hearing, community members expressed concerns regarding potential increases in crime and social disorder, as well as the lack of nearby amenities. City councillors also debated the suitability of an industrial area for the location, though they acknowledged the strategic benefit of expanding services to different neighborhoods.
