Hope Mission proposes new 120-bed shelter in Edmonton

The Hope Mission is seeking to expand its permanent shelter services in South Edmonton by converting a warehouse and thrift store near Argyll Road and 75th Street into a 120-bed facility. Tim Pasma, senior director of the Hope Mission, noted a 23 per cent increase in people seeking shelter during last winter, emphasizing the need to decentralize services.

A recent public hearing regarding the rezoning application revealed significant local opposition. Some neighboring businesses expressed concerns that the proximity to a casino, liquor store, and cannabis shop makes the location unsuitable. Critics also pointed to a lack of essential services like grocery stores, pharmacies, and healthcare in the immediate area.

Local business owners also raised security concerns. Ranvir Singh of Regency Innovations reported previous incidents involving property damage, trespassing, and arson related to people living on the streets. However, other businesses within the industrial park expressed that the facility would not disrupt their operations.
