Hora Extra mare arrives to potentially breed with Caramelo

Hora Extra, a six-year-old Crioula mare, has arrived at the Veterinary Hospital of the Lutheran University of Brazil (Ulbra) in Canoas to potentially breed with Caramelo, a horse that became a symbol of resilience following the 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

Donated by a breeder from São Sebastião do Caí, the mare weighs approximately 350 to 380 kilograms and is described as docile and calm. Before any breeding takes place, veterinary teams will conduct detailed health screenings and nutritional assessments to ensure she is fit for reproduction.

The project aims to continue Caramelo’s legacy, which gained international attention after he was stranded on a rooftop for four days during the floods. The mare will also participate in practical learning activities for veterinary medicine students at the university.
