Horacio Alcalá’s film ‘Sobre las olas’ premieres in Jalisco

The film ‘Sobre las olas’ (2025), directed by Horacio Alcalá, is set for its premiere at the Cineteca UdeG on September 4. The production blends surrealism and magical realism, utilizing the landscapes of Lake Chapala and the Los Altos region of Jalisco to depict the fictional island of Magdala.

The narrative follows two women pursuing their dreams, exploring themes of power, money, and human fragility through the use of masks as symbols of character flaws. The film is a deeply personal project for Alcalá, who returned to his childhood roots in Mexico after living in Europe for 20 years to capture the aesthetic and cultural beauty of the region.

Lead actress Ángeles Cruz, who also co-wrote the script, received a nomination for Best Actress at the 2026 Ariel Awards for her role as Gloria Zamora. Additionally, the film has been preselected as a candidate to represent Mexico at the 2027 Oscar and Goya awards.
