Increased emotional sensitivity and frequent crying during pregnancy are driven by complex biological and psychological factors. A primary cause is the rapid rise in estrogen and progesterone levels, particularly during the first trimester, which affects brain function and neurotransmitters responsible for mood regulation.
Research published in Nature Neuroscience indicates that pregnancy can lead to structural changes in brain regions associated with empathy, social understanding, and emotion recognition. These changes are viewed as an adaptation to help mothers better perceive their infants' needs.
Physical factors such as chronic fatigue, morning sickness, back pain, and insomnia also lower stress tolerance. Psychologically, the transition to motherhood often brings anxieties regarding childbirth, infant health, and lifestyle changes. While emotional outbursts are generally a normal way to release tension, experts advise seeking medical consultation if crying is accompanied by prolonged hopelessness or anxiety lasting more than two weeks, as this may indicate prenatal depression.
