Hormonal health experts address perimenopause and menopause transitions

Health experts and organizations are highlighting the physiological changes associated with perimenopause and menopause. In Chicago, BAPS Charities hosted a Women’s Health Awareness Lecture presented by Dr. Andrea Das to educate the community on how fluctuating hormone levels affect physical and emotional well-being, including sleep, mood, and bone health.

Medical specialists, including Dr. Ghazala Aziz-Scott of the Marion Gluck Clinic, note that women in their 40s often experience heavier or more irregular menstrual cycles during perimenopause. This is frequently caused by a decline in progesterone, which stabilizes the endometrial lining, coupled with a potential rise in estrogen. This imbalance, sometimes referred to as “oestrogen dominant,” can lead to increased blood loss and erratic cycles. Other factors, such as anovulation or changes in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), also contribute to these shifts.
