Andropause Causes Energy Loss and Sexual Changes in Men Over 40

Andropause, a gradual decline in testosterone that typically begins between ages 40 and 55, brings a range of physical, emotional and sexual symptoms for many men. Common signs include reduced energy and fatigue, mood swings, irritability, decreased libido, fewer and weaker erections, loss of muscle tone, weight gain around the waist, and an increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.

Experts stress that a proper diagnosis requires blood tests confirming low testosterone and ruling out other conditions such as diabetes, obesity, tumors, or liver and kidney problems. When deficiency is verified, urologists may prescribe androgen replacement therapy in forms such as injections, gels or pills, which can restore vitality, improve sexual function, and boost mood and confidence. Lifestyle measures—avoiding excessive alcohol, maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress—are also recommended to mitigate symptoms and support hormonal balance.

According to endocrinologist Mayra Silva, “Andropause can significantly affect quality of life, but with appropriate medical and lifestyle interventions men can regain energy and wellbeing.”
