Hornafjörður Ring Road begins automated toll collection

Toll collection has commenced on the new section of the Ring Road passing through Hornafjörður, Iceland. The road, which opened to traffic in June, is part of Vegagerðin’s first collaborative project. The infrastructure development, costing over 10 billion ISK, shortens the Ring Road by 12 kilometers and the route from Reykjavík to Hornafjörður by approximately 14 kilometers, reducing travel time by an estimated 15 to 20 minutes.

Managed by Spalar ehf., the tolling system is fully automated using cameras to read license plates. Drivers do not need to stop at booths; instead, monthly invoices are sent directly to users' online banks.

Fees are based on vehicle weight: • Vehicles under 3.5 tons: 1,500 ISK per trip. • Vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tons: 2,100 ISK per trip. • Vehicles over 7.5 tons: 4,500 ISK per trip.

Discounts and monthly payment caps are available for smaller and medium-sized vehicles. For vehicles under 3.5 tons, the maximum monthly charge is 18,750 ISK, reached after 22 trips. For medium vehicles (3.5 to 7.5 tons), the cap is 26,250 ISK. There is no monthly cap for vehicles exceeding 7.5 tons. By law, these tolls are intended to cover at least 50% of the construction, maintenance, operation, and development costs of the infrastructure.
