Hornisgrinde-Wolf: Authorities attempt to deter abnormal wolf in Black Forest

Authorities in Germany's Black Forest are attempting to implement “deterrence measures” to manage a wolf known as the Hornisgrinde-Wolf, colloquially called “Grindi.” For over three years, the male wolf has exhibited abnormal behavior by approaching hikers and dogs at distances of less than 30 meters, with some sightings recorded as close as six meters.

While the animal has not attacked anyone, experts from across Europe warn that its unpredictable behavior poses a potential danger. Although a permit to shoot the wolf was issued earlier this year, it was temporarily suspended in March following public outcry and vigils.

Efforts to capture or distance the wolf have repeatedly failed, including attempts to use radio collars, tranquilizer guns, and foot traps. National Park Director Berthold Reichle emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife while acknowledging the necessity of managing the situation, noting that the wolf’s behavior is not normal. Officials are now focusing on retraining the animal to avoid human contact to prevent a lethal escalation.
