Horror cinema sees major shifts in critical rankings and indie releases

The horror film industry is seeing significant movement in both independent releases and critical rankings. Jane Schoenbrun’s new meta-slasher, ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’, has become the highest-rated horror film of 2026, achieving a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, the film follows a director attempting to revive a fictional horror franchise.

This release has overtaken ‘Obsession’, a commercial success that earned $371 million worldwide, which currently holds a 94% score.

In the independent sector, several notable projects have emerged. The platform Screamify has launched ‘MICRO HORRORS™’, a division for short-form thrillers, debuting with the series ‘Autonomous’. Mahal Empire Productions released the sci-fi action-horror film ‘Alien Storm’, while Sean-Michael Argo’s ‘The Hoodoos’ has arrived on streaming via Amazon. Additionally, the ‘Human Hibachi’ franchise has expanded to Tubi with the releases of ‘Human Hibachi 2: Feast in the Forest’ and ‘Human Hibachi 3: The Last Supper’. In Philadelphia, the ‘The Stutterer’ slasher trilogy is preparing for production.
