Obsession sets box‑office record as top‑grossing original horror of the 21st century

Curry Barker’s low‑budget horror film Obsession has become the highest‑grossing original horror movie of the 21st century, earning $426 million worldwide on a production budget of about $750 000. The film surpassed previous records held by titles such as Signs (408 million) and Sinners (371 million), and it now ranks among the ten most lucrative horror films of all time.

The movie opened in the United States and several other markets in May 2026, quickly topping box‑office charts and remaining in the top ten for months. Critical response has been strong, with a 94 % approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After its theatrical run, the film entered premium‑digital rental and sale platforms in late June, later moving to streaming services such as Peacock (U.S.) and Universal+ (Latin America) in July.

The success has spurred further activity for the Barker family: Jeff Barker, the director’s father, is writing and directing the psychological‑horror short Medium Rare, starring Dane Cook and Lesley Ann Warren, with production slated for Los Angeles this summer. The film’s physical‑media release is scheduled for September 2026 in the United Kingdom (Blu‑ray, 4K Ultra HD and DVD).
