Horror genre sees creative growth and industry debate

The horror film genre experienced significant activity and discussion throughout 2025 and 2026. Notable releases included sequels such as ‘28 Years Later’, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, which was noted for its exploration of cultural strife. Other prominent titles included ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’, ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’, and ‘Five Nights at Freddy's 2’, alongside Stephen King adaptations like ‘The Monkey’ and ‘The Long Walk’.

At the Fantastic Fest in Austin, industry professionals discussed the genre's economic and creative landscape. Panelists from the streaming service Shudder and various filmmakers highlighted that horror allows for creative experimentation and ‘big swings’ with relatively low financial risk. The genre is noted for being accessible to emerging filmmakers who can deliver impactful stories without the need for massive budgets or complex set designs.
