Horse Swimming Used for Training and Rehabilitation

Swimming in ponds, lakes or rivers is promoted as a conditioning and rehabilitation method for horses. When a horse loses contact with the bottom, the work of its limbs, spine, respiratory and circulatory systems changes significantly. The benefits depend on the animal’s health, experience, training goals and the safety of the water site.

Buoyancy reduces limb loading by about 10‑15 % at elbow‑depth immersion and even more at pelvis depth, while water resistance increases the effort required for active limb movement. This makes swimming useful for maintaining muscle and cardiovascular work while limiting stress on injured or healing limbs. However, swimming does not fully replace land work because the mechanical stimuli differ; the limbs do not receive the same bone‑loading impacts as they do on solid ground.

The practice is distinct from related activities such as standing in water, walking in shallow water, or using a water treadmill, each of which affects the musculoskeletal system in different ways.
