Horticulturists recommend regional plants for Southeast and Northeast gardens

Horticulturists have identified specific plant recommendations tailored to different regional climates in the United States.

In the Southeast, horticulturist Brie Arthur suggests plants that offer ecological value and adaptability to variable weather. Her recommendations include Buttonbush, a native shrub that supports pollinators and tolerates wet soils, and Chinese Snowball Viburnum, which produces large white blooms in spring. She also highlights Seashore Mallow for its ability to handle coastal conditions.

For Northeast gardens, Joann Vieira of The Trustees of Reservations recommends species such as the Japanese spicebush, known for its fragrant yellow spring blossoms and colorful fall foliage. Additionally, the ‘April Mist’ rhododendron is noted as a rare, early-blooming hybrid that produces lavender flowers in partial shade.
