Hortobágy sees surge in crane migration numbers

The crane migration season has begun in the Hortobágy region of Hungary, a critical terrestrial resting site for European migratory birds. Approximately 95% of cranes migrating through Hungary utilize the Hortobágy wetlands, spending several months in the area.

Recent data from the Hortobágy National Park Directorate shows a significant increase in numbers during September. On September 3, 2026, 3,015 cranes were recorded, a figure that rose to 7,290 by September 10. The high numbers are attributed to the growing European breeding population and the species' ability to recolonize former habitats.

Park officials conduct weekly synchronous counts at dawn and dusk to monitor the population. These counts help researchers understand the impact of food availability and weather patterns on migration routes.
