Hospital Alassia performs unprecedented surgery on newborn in Santa Fe
The Hospital de Niños Dr. Orlando Alassia in Santa Fe successfully performed an unprecedented mandibular osteogenic distraction surgery on a newborn. The infant, born in Reconquista, was diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence, a rare congenital condition where an underdeveloped jaw causes the tongue to obstruct the airway.
The specialized procedure involved performing a controlled section of the jaw and installing distractors to progressively lengthen the bone, thereby widening the airway. This intervention allowed the newborn to breathe independently and successfully avoided the need for a tracheostomy, which is a common consequence of the condition.
