Hospital Avellaneda to host international Phase 3 vaccine trial

Hospital Avellaneda in Tucumán, Argentina, has been selected to participate in a Phase 3 international clinical trial for a new vaccine against Clostridioides difficile. The study, supported by Pfizer, aims to evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine in preventing infections caused by this resistant bacterium, which often results in severe diarrhea and complications in elderly patients.

The research focuses on individuals over the age of 65, a demographic particularly vulnerable due to weakened immune systems and frequent contact with healthcare settings. Clostridioides difficile infections are often associated with patients who have undergone repeated antibiotic treatments or hospitalizations, frequently leading to difficult-to-treat cases and re-hospitalization.

Miguel Ferre Contreras, the medical executive secretary of SIPROSA, noted that the transition to Phase 3 indicates the vaccine has already demonstrated safety in previous stages. The inclusion of a public health facility in such an international study highlights the growing capacity of Tucumán’s public health system to host high-level clinical research.
