Hospital Calderón Guardia adopts AI ultrasound technology

Hospital Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia has incorporated three new ultrasound machines equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to improve diagnostic capabilities for breast, liver, and thyroid conditions.

The equipment, provided by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), features high-resolution imaging and an AI system that assists specialists by identifying suspicious patterns and lesions in real time. For breast examinations, the technology tracks lesions as they are scanned, while for liver studies, it evaluates fat percentages. The machines also include color Doppler systems to assess blood flow.

Each unit cost approximately $67,000. These new devices replace seven traditional ultrasound machines and will allow the Radiology and Medical Imaging service to maintain care for approximately 950 patients per month.
