Hospital Clínico San Carlos launches smart lockers for medication

Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid has implemented a new system of smart lockers to allow outpatient chronic patients to collect their medication autonomously. The system is designed to eliminate waiting times at service windows and provide flexible collection hours between 8:00 and 20:00.

To ensure safety, hospital pharmacists review and validate every treatment and monitor patient follow-up appointments before the medication is released. Patients receive a unique QR code via their mobile phones to access their specific compartment, a process that takes approximately 30 seconds.

In its first month of operation, more than 100 patients have used the service to collect 300 packages. The hospital estimates the system could eventually benefit up to 1,800 patients per month.
