Hospital Clínico San Cecilio hosts meeting on spasmodic dysphonia
The Hospital Universitario Clínico San Cecilio in Granada hosted the first meeting between professionals and patients regarding spasmodic dysphonia. Organized by the Otorhinolaryngology Service, the event aimed to increase awareness of this neurological voice disorder, which causes involuntary vocal cord spasms and can result in a broken or halting voice.
The meeting brought together approximately 15 patients and ten professionals to discuss the condition through the lenses of otorhinolaryngology, neurophysiology, and speech therapy. Because the disorder is rare—affecting between one and seven people per 100,000—diagnosis can often take up to a year. Specialist Marta Martínez Martínez noted that the condition significantly impacts quality of life by hindering daily communication.
