Hospital Cunqueiro to establish psychiatry unit in emergency department

Hospital Universitario Cunqueiro in Galicia will establish a dedicated psychiatry area within its emergency department. This initiative aims to address the rising demand for mental health services, including consultations and admissions.

The new space will feature four specific stations: two for psychiatric consultations, one for containment, and a multipurpose area primarily for social work support. Additionally, a specialized waiting area will be implemented, where patients can be monitored by mental health nurses in a controlled environment designed to minimize stress.

The project also includes improving access to the psychiatry ward and creating a semi-critical zone with four monitoring stations for stabilized patients. Sergas expects to put the construction works out to tender in the coming weeks, with work potentially beginning late 2025 or early 2027.
