The ophthalmology department at the Hospital de Conxo, within the Santiago de Compostela and Barbanza health area, has significantly increased its surgical activity by 55.7% over the last four years.

In 2025, the service managed approximately 35,000 initial consultations and reduced its average waiting time from 34.9 to 22 days. Specialized procedures performed in 2025 included 4,500 cataract surgeries, 470 vitrectomies, 240 glaucoma interventions, and 110 ocular tissue transplants. The unit also administered 8,300 intravitreal injections for retina pathologies.

The department has integrated advanced technologies, such as OCT-guided femtosecond lasers and the Ngenuity 3D visualization system supported by artificial intelligence, to enhance surgical precision. Designated as a CSUR center since 2008, the service specializes in treating intraocular tumors and complex ocular surface reconstructions, serving patients from across Galicia and other Spanish autonomous communities.
