Hospital de San Fernando performs successful awake brain surgery

The Neurosurgery Service at the Hospital de San Fernando successfully performed a high-complexity surgery to remove a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) located in a sensitive area of the brain related to language functions.

To minimize the risk of neurological damage, surgeons performed the procedure while the patient was awake. This allowed medical teams to monitor her neurological capabilities in real time through language exercises, object recognition, and motor activities. The multidisciplinary team included neurosurgeons, neuroanesthesiologists, neurophysiologists, and neuropsychologists. The patient was discharged four days after the successful intervention.

In a separate medical development, the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín in Spain has incorporated ultrasound technology to treat complex cases of cerebral venous thrombosis. This endovascular approach aims to restore blood flow in patients who do not respond sufficiently to conventional anticoagulant treatments.
