Hospital de São João implements companion animal visits
The São João Local Health Unit (ULS São João) in Porto has implemented a new initiative allowing companion animals to visit patients during hospitalization. The program is part of a humanization strategy aimed at enhancing the emotional well-being and psychological comfort of patients, particularly those facing long-term stays or delicate clinical situations.
Visits are not automatic and are subject to individual evaluation by healthcare teams. Criteria for approval include the patient's clinical status, the specific hospital ward, and potential risks to other patients or staff. The animals must also meet specific requirements regarding health, hygiene, vaccination, and behavior compatible with a hospital environment. Requests for these visits are initiated by healthcare professionals and subsequently analyzed by a responsible team.
