Hospital de São José faces capacity crisis due to social cases

Hospital de São José in Lisbon is facing significant capacity issues due to 'social cases'—patients who have been clinically cleared for discharge but cannot leave the facility due to a lack of social support. Miguel Paiva, president of the Board of Directors for the São José Local Health Unit (ULS), reported that 51 patients are currently occupying beds they no longer medically require, while a similar number of patients are waiting in the emergency department for available beds.

Paiva noted that the hospital serves as a high-complexity end-of-line unit, with 42% of emergency patients arriving from outside its immediate geographic area and 15% being referred from other hospitals or private units. The administration is attempting to find internal alternative spaces to manage these patients before the winter contingency phase in December. The situation has caused tension within the hospital, with the director of the emergency service previously threatening to resign over the lack of resources to ensure dignified treatment for patients.
