15‑year‑old receives three‑year internment for double femicide of teachers in Michoacán

A 15‑year‑old adolescent was sentenced to the maximum penalty for minors—three years of internment—by a specialized juvenile court in Michoacán. The court found him criminally responsible for the March shooting at the Antón Makárenko preparatory school in Lázaro Cárdenas, where he used an AR‑15 rifle concealed in a guitar case to kill teachers María del Rosario Sagrero and Tatiana Madrigal. The sentencing was issued through an abbreviated procedure approved by the State Attorney General and accepted by the victims’ families.

The judge also ordered payment of 3,280,769 pesos in damages to the families of the slain teachers. The case has sparked national debate over adolescent criminal responsibility, access to military‑grade firearms, and school security.

The internment will be served at the Centro Integral para Adolescentes in Morelia, where the youth will undergo a reintegration program under the Mexican National System of Justice for Adolescents.
